Top 5 Local Breweries to Visit in Green Bay
July 22, 2019 | Green Bay,Nothing says “Welcome to Green Bay!” like sipping a cold beer at one of the area’s famous craft breweries. We may be a little biased, but the breweries in Green Bay are known for their creativity and ingenuity. From Badger State Brewing Company’s award-winning brews next to Lambeau Field to Ahnapee Brewery’s small craft batches in scenic Algoma, Greater Green Bay is a destination for beer tasting. Poke The Bear loves all of our local breweries, here are a few of our local brew fan favorites that we always try to have on hand for you to try.
In no particular order (we love ’em all), here are the top five Green Bay breweries you’ve just got to visit.
1. BADGER STATE BREWING COMPANY
A hop, skip and a jump from Lambeau Field, Badger State Brewing Company is a must. You can sample 24 beers, including Badger State offerings and beers from guest Wisconsin breweries. Try their Green Chop Session IPA with a smooth, hoppy taste on tap as well as the Bunyan Badger Brown Ale.
Badger State started with a mission to be part of and help drive the local economy, particularly in the Stadium District neighborhood — and they’ve done just that.
2. STILLMANK BREWING COMPANY
Looking for Green Bay brews that stand out? Stillmank Brewing Company adds a unique twist to fine Wisconsin beers. Try their award-winning Wisco Disco ESB, brewed with five different malts, four hop additions and a touch of lactose — it pairs well with your favorite cheese. Situated just a couple of miles from Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary and Amusement Park, Stillmank Brewing Company is a go-to place for tasting some of the best beer in the state.
3. NOBLE ROOTS BREWING COMPANY
If you’re on your way to Lambeau Field, you’ve got to stop by Noble Roots Brewing Company. Located in a former service station in the Schmitt Park neighborhood, this brewery creates high-quality, approachable beer for the locals. Sample their flagship Noble Roots IPA and the Mackinac Island Amber Ale. Noble Roots brings tried-and-true as well as innovative brews to the table. This is what Green Bay is all about — community, hard work and grabbing a local pint before the big game.
4. THUMB KNUCKLE BREWING COMPANY
Take a scenic drive northeast of Green Bay, and you’ll find Thumb Knuckle Brewing Company in Kewaunee County. Thumb Knuckle crafts quality beers that have quenched the local community’s thirst since 2017, but don’t let this brewery’s youth fool you. Head Brewer Dain Treml and Brewmaster Ed Thiry source nearly all ingredients locally and even use repurposed dairy equipment to brew.
At Thumb Knuckle, the feeling of Wisconsin pride runs deep — make sure to try their Heyder Helles Lager and Belgian Beauty Witbier.
5. AHNAPEE BREWERY
Back in 1868, Henry Schmiling, a Civil War veteran, began brewing beer in Algoma. Today, Ahnapee Brewery continues this legacy with full-flavored beers just a 45-minute drive from Green Bay on the shores of Lake Michigan. Owner/Head Brewer Nick Calaway has made his mark on the local community with small-batch brews like Little Soldier Amber Ale and Two Stall Chocolate Milk Stout. The taproom is a destination all its own — a two-stall garage converted into an inviting space near Crescent Beach Boardwalk.
